I’ll try not to embarrass him too much by gushing about him, but suffice it to say that I can only hope that my son grows up to be as independent and sure of himself. Thank you, Matt, for your patience and cooperation, and to parents Heather and Philippe for asking me to photograph your family. It was a beautiful evening, and I enjoyed spending it at the beach with you!
Their last portraits with me were the evening that the fire storms started last Fall - a very memorable evening! I’m sad that dad Jamie couldn’t make this trip, but here are a few for you all to enjoy. It was wonderful to see you both again, and just delightful to see that our Adventure Girl is just more so. Her dancing, singing, chatting, climbing and pretending made my heart smile.

The Jackson Family - December 2006

I rarely use the blog to publish personal appeals, but I think you’ll agree that this one is worthy, and is very close to my heart. Our friends Garry and Suzy Jackson, along with children Wesley (age four) and Molly (age 3), are looking to expand their family with an open adoption. They suffered the loss of their newborn baby girl, Abby, several months ago, when she was just 11 days old. After much grieving and counseling, they started looking into the adoption process, and found that it felt just right for them. As they put it, they “have a lot of love to share and opportunities to give a child, and believe that somewhere out there is a little person waiting to join us.” You can read more about their story here; they have written an open letter to a birthmother.

If you know of anyone who might be pregnant and considering adoption, or anyone you know who might know someone in that position, please feel free to forward this link. I have known Garry and Suzy for about four years; our sons are the same age, and both Andrew and I love our playdates with the Jacksons. I can honestly say that they are two of the best parents I know; they just love children. Family is very important to them, and I hope that their dreams of opening up their hearts to love another child are realized.

For more information, you can contact Sarah Jensen Elhoff at the Adoption Center of San Diego at 858.535.3033, or sarahadopt@msn.com.

On a related note, stay tuned - I’m working on some ways that Eos Photography can support adoption.

Many thanks!

OK, raise your hands if you know about Quail Botanical Gardens! Extra points if you have a family membership to one of the most magical places in the county. I love shooting here. There is a peace that surrounds you the minute you close your car door and you start wandering along the footpaths. Tobey and his parents were kind enough to spend a morning there with me, meandering through the garden and enjoying nature. Bullfrogs and butterflies, running water and still ponds are all part of the magic that is Quail. Thank you to Stephen and Claudia and Tobey for the quality time we spent enjoying nature today.

Please join me in welcoming baby Isabelle and her family to the blog! This was a very special visit; not only did she come down from Los Angeles with her parents, but this was her very first trip to the beach. How cool is that?! It was such a pleasure to meet her and parents Jeff and Floie, especially since I have “known” Jeff for two years but this was our first in-person meeting. Jeff is the creative genius behind the Eos identity and logo, for which I am eternally grateful. I am so happy to be able to exercise a little creativity for him and his family. It was such a pleasure to finally meet - thank you both for bringing your charming girl to San Diego, I loved meeting you all!

Big brothers Jack and Ben are pretty enamored with her, and parents Shawn and Nicole are charmed to add a girl to the team. We’ve been hoping to get Dr. B down to the beach for some portraits for a while; being a busy obstetrician has its obstacles! But it was worth the wait.

Sad! Our starfish project is coming to an end. I loved meeting my two new families, baby Koa and parents Keith and Angela, and expectant parents Scott and Amy. The twins, Eden and Alex, I have had the pleasure of photographing since they were on the inside - I always love seeing them, each time they surprise me with how much they have grown and how their personalities shine through. They are seven months old now; you can see their newborn photos here; they also won top prize for our Best of 2007 contest!

I honestly can’t decide who gets the amazing family award - Koa’s parents, who let me put their infant in the kelp, Amy and Scott, who drove from the O.C. at 12 days past their due date, or Alex and Eden’s parents, who trusted me enough to attempt laying their babies on the sand with a quickly rising tide - sorry that one didn’t work out!! Big thanks and big hugs to all the families tonight - thank you so much for participating in this project, can’t wait to share the final results with everyone! In the meantime, here are a few sneak peeks.

Meet my newest Eos baby - Logan! He is nine months old, and we had so much fun together. Actually it was mostly mom and dad, Jennifer and Darren, that entertained him. But wow does the camera love this boy. And I am pretty smitten, too. He has the most expressive face and blue eyes that captivate - a gift from his mom. He read books, explored his food, took a shower with dad - we photographed it all. He was so tired that he completely crashed in dad’s arms at the end. So of course we had to create some sleeping baby photos. Jennifer and Darren - thank you for the pleasure, hugs to Logan, can’t wait to show you the rest!
What melted my heart during today’s session… Ryder singing to his little brother, and baby Kai answering him in his lullaby singsong voice.

We carved out some family time this weekend to drive out to Anza Borrego State Park. The wildflowers were just passing their peak. It truly was amazing to see such color coming out of the sand. My favorite part was the silence. So very very quiet, you can hear yourself think there. At dusk we had a picnic on the sand before driving back home. I’m very grateful there are wild places like this to enjoy, and for Andrew to explore. There is nothing quite like watching a child run through the wildflowers, laughing at the sheer joy of it.

Running a business is just chock full of choices. There are easy ones, but of course there are plenty of hard ones, too. Managing a greener photography business comprises a little of both types! On the one hand, doing what I can in my little corner of the world to tread lightly is a no-brainer for me - easy. But then all of the little choices under that broader heading can be a little more challenging to implement. My approach has always been to create archival, heirloom-quality work that stands out in a world of disposable and temporary things. Finding green alternatives in the high-tech field of photography has been challenging; but not impossible! I am proud to back up my commitment to running a green business with environmentally-friendly offerings for clients - including mats, framing, and albums. Here is where you can read more about my approach to greener photography.

Wow… tempus fugit my friends. Let’s take a little stroll down memory lane. Here is baby Jet at one month old…

How great is my job? I mean seriously! To see a little guy like this grow so much, and to get to document that… I just love what I do. But enough mushiness, here are a few more of Jet in all his cuteness.

Brooklyn and Tim, thanks for a great morning. But most of all - thank you for trusting me to document Jet’s first year. It is such an honor and a pleasure.

And I’m so glad they did! I don’t know how I get so lucky, but I keep saying this because it’s true - I get to photograph the nicest families. Working at their home was a perfect fit. The kids were able to run wild on their beautiful property, full of amazing landscaping. I even got to meet the newest family members - baby chicks! Many thanks to Loren, Vanessa, Myles and Ginger for a very fun morning.

Congratulations to all of the Eos Best of 2007 nominees. The people have spoken! Here are the winning images, determined by the top numbers of votes. Thank you all so much for voting, and for all of the great feedback. This has been a really fun way to kick off the new year; I’ll definitely make this an annual event!

First Place: Eden and Alex - Newborn Twins. Taken on the day they turned two weeks old, this image is also currently hanging in my exhibit at The Perfect Frame. It is a visual testament to why I love photographing newborns right around this age! I have photographed this pair both “on the inside” and as newborns, which is so gratifying.

Second Place: Nico & Blue - A Boy and His Dog. This image received a ton of comments, lots of fun to read through! Nico was six months old in this image, and his “big sister” Blue is a wonderful companion. I will be photographing this family over the next year, so look for more from this pair soon!

Third Place: Reflective Kat. Definitely one of my all-time personal favorites, “Reflective Kat” will be entered in more formal competitions this year. For a contrast, see the blog entry following this; Katherine is growing up so quickly! I really do have the nicest families.

Yesterday was one of those beautiful winter days at the beach. Gentle light, sparse crowds, cool sand, gorgeous sunset. My first portrait session with these great kids was when Cullen was six months old. I love seeing how he has grown into such a loving little boy, who is very into exploring and beachcombing! His big sister Katherine is always just pure joy to photograph; she has a love and enthusiasm for life that just shines through in every image I have ever taken of her. It makes my heart warm to photograph this family; the kids are both a huge credit to their parents. Thank you again to Brian and Krissy for the pleasure.

Parenting is a daily challenge. Parenting twins? I can’t even imagine. These girls are so well loved, and this is one attached family. I know that this will serve them well while dad Luis is off serving with the Navy for a few months. It makes me sad to think of them apart, of course; but I am thrilled that we created some images to keep them together in their hearts. Megan and Luis, thank you for the honor. Olivia and Ruby, you are such rock stars! Thank you all so much for the pleasure.

I’m very excited about this… the First Annual Eos Photography Portrait Contest is officially starting!! I have chosen my favorite ten images from my 2007 portrait sessions. This is completely and totally subjective. EDITED: instead of voting on your three favorites, just use the poll below to pick one. Let your voice be heard! The top vote-getting image will be awarded first prize, and a $300 gift certificate goes to the family!

One of my business values is to donate my time, talent and products for worthy causes. I was very proud to be a part of several volunteer efforts in 2007 with organizations whose missions are near and dear to me. I donated photography gift certificates for charity auctions for Labrador Rescuers and Boobs on the Move. For Labrador Harbor, I created images for their 2008 Landmark Labs calendar. One of Andrew’s happy places was another 2007 beneficiary; I photographed the Quail Botanical Garden’s annual Gala in the Gardens fundraising event. I will continue my efforts with Project Heirloom this winter, providing photographs for local families who lost their homes in the Fall wildfires. If you know of an organization that could benefit from my efforts, please contact me for a 2008 application.

She is the daughter of our friends from Portland, who came to visit recently. I used to think of them as Dave’s friends, as they all went to college together. But over the last few years especially, they have become my friends as well; and my life is the richer for it. Laura and Tony and Tomlin, we loved spending time with you and I was honored that you asked me to photograph your family. I’m glad we had such a perfect SoCal evening at the beach; sorry that dinner didn’t go quite as smoothly! Here are a few of my favorite images.
