Best Family Portrait ~ Milo & Parents

Milo’s family has designated Seaside Giving, the charitable arm of Dr. Biter’s birth center, which is due to open in a few months. Another cause near and dear to me! In mom Emily’s words, “Our birth with Milo was so wonderful, that we would love for you to donate to [Seaside Giving], giving others the incredible opportunity to have the birth that they want.”

One interesting thing I noted just now… all the winners this year have a few things in common. I would describe them all as connected, emotional, timeless. These are words that I have often used to describe my work; but seeing others select these as a group reinforces the direction I intend to pursue. Look for more work like this from me in the future… with more intensity. I’m excited to see how this year unfolds.

I’m taking some time at the beginning of 2010 to reflect on my work this past year. Each and every one of the families I worked with in 2009 was memorable, with very emotional images; it made the narrowing down process very challenging! The images that I chose for this contest are simply my personal favorites.

Categories
Unlike my first two “Best of” contests, this year I have broken the images down into four categories - Pregnancy, Baby, Child, and Family. There will be one winner from each category. I’ll be hosting a Parent-Child contest this Spring - just too many images that I love in that category!

Winning Images
So… what do the winners receive aside from glory and fame? The last year has been rough for a lot of families. Please help me to spread a little love in the world. Each of the four winners will receive a print of their winning image, and each will be asked to designate their favorite non-profit organization. I will make a donation to each of the four charitable organizations in the winning families’ names.

Why this contest?
Reflecting on the past year of creating portraits is a great way for me to think about my focus and direction. Hearing what you think helps me grow as an artist. Please vote for one image in each category, and ask all your friends and family to vote as well. Please leave me your thoughts by using the comments box, or by posting a public comment below.

Dates and Rules
This contest is open immediately, and will close on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2010. Anyone can vote, from anywhere in the world, but one vote per person in each category, please! I am collecting names and email addresses for this reason, but they will not be publicly visible. Winners will be notified by February 20th. Winning images and benefiting charities will be posted by February 28th. I will announce the winners in my next newsletter, to which you will automatically be added by voting. You can help spread the love by spreading the word - blog, email, or post on facebook about this contest!

Come join us as we celebrate the beginning of Babies by the Sea Birthing Center, the 1st of its kind where OBs will work side-by-side with midwives, where there will be surgical rooms in case of emergency situations, where the entire interior of the building will be made with environmentally conscious materials, and where there will be access to holistic treatments for pregnancy, birth & postpartum.

Show your support for Dr. Robert Biter’s Babies by the Sea Birthing Center by purchasing a recycled blown glass leaf with your own handwritten message to be displayed on the tree in the new birthing center lobby. The tree has been commissioned by Robert Verhees. Large sea glass tiles will also be available to purchase with your own inscription on it and will be displayed in the birth center. The leaves are $150 and the tiles are $300.

All proceeds of the entrance fee, silent auction & leaves/tiles will go towards the birth center. The expected grand opening is scheduled for May 2010!

Here is baby Ashley at two weeks old; you can see her “on the inside” portraits here. Big sister Nicole is just in love, enchanted, enthralled with her new baby sister. At age four she will probably remember what it was like to welcome her new sister home. Tyler, age two, is figuring things out! He is intrigued and curious about this new person, loves to be near his baby sister, and is trying out his big brother role. I am honored and pleased that having these images will help these three siblings recognize the boundless love that has existed in their family from day one. Thank you Natalie and Aaron for asking me to document your newly expanded family.

The Electronic Disposal Group has planned four e-waste recycling events in the county this month, including one this weekend.Each event will run from 9AM to 3PM.

The first event is today and tomorrow in Carlsbad in the parking lot of Westfield Plaza Camino Real, 2525 El Camino Real.

Two others are scheduled January 16th and 17th. One will be held in the parking lot of Grossmont Center, 5500 Grossmont Center Drive, in La Mesa. The other will take place in La Jolla in the parking lot of Ironstone Bank, 835 Pearl Street.

A collection will also take place January 30th in Encinitas at Wancho Santa Fe Security, 1991 Village Park Way.

Accepted items include computers, TVs, wires, stereos, phones and VCRs. Batteries, household appliances, light bulbs and microwaves are not accepted. For more information, go to ewasteca.org.

Biter http://www.eosphoto.com/blog/2010/01/07/wolfie-at-three-months/ I always wonder when a newborn becomes “just” an infant? Is there an official age, or a developmental milestone? Or is just when you get tired of calculating how many weeks old s/he is? Whatever that magical formula is, Wolfie is leaving his newborn stage behind for sure. He’s teething (yes - already), just getting up 1-2 times per night to nurse (don’t hate me!!), laughing, cooing, and otherwise engaging with his world. He hates baths and car rides, loves being held and having us sing to him. He’s fascinated by doggie kisses, and relaxes and listens intently whenever we play Norah Jones for him. Andrew is his favorite entertainer, he falls asleep on his dada fairly regularly, and he loves to “talk” with his mama. The newborn weeks are really hard for most families; we are glad to be moving on and enjoying Wolfie at three months old. Without further delay, and just in time for his four month birthday (at least I’m shooting on time!), here is Wolfie at three months old:

Six years have flown by in the blink of an eye. Andrew is six years old, and still the love of my life. He remains enamored with trains, trucks, and cars and has added Legos to his favorite toys. He still hates shirts with tags, pants with zippers and snaps, and being called anything other than “Andrew.” Writing is becoming a great joy for him, and he often makes labels for things around the house. He loves his baby brother; the first thing he does in the morning and the last thing before bed at night is to shower him with hugs and kisses. He is kind, thoughtful, creative, and loves to make jokes. I am grateful every day for being his mama!

This is one of a handful of sessions I’m shooting this Fall, before increasing my schedule in early 2010.

What a difference there is from months four to nine. Here are her images from our first session - she has grown so much! Isabelle is so much more aware of her environment. She’s interested in everything around her, and is crawling at a fast pace to keep up with her big sister. She loved being outdoors for this session, and I don’t think it will be long before she is walking on her own! I can’t wait for our next session together to continue documenting her first year. I need to dig up my images of Andrew at this age, but I do see a pretty strong resemblance between the two brothers. These days I have to convince big brother Andrew to have his portrait made; he turned six years old two weeks ago and I need to do some updated images! But in the meantime, here’s a little Wolfie at two months old for your viewing pleasure. He is keeping us busy! He can hold his head up with minimal bobbling, he is starting to thrash his hips and legs from side to side, and loves to coo, squeal, and stick his tongue out at us. He loves to interact with his big brother, has started noticing the Kalli dog, and is mesmerized by safari animal patterns. And I think he has a lovely smile!

We had an amazing, intense, wonderful natural birth and are adjusting to life with two sons! Big brother Andrew is so thrilled that Wolfie is finally here, and spends lots of time loving on his new baby brother.

Karis was her happy, bubbly self, exploring the flowers with me and being so cooperative and mature - I keep forgetting that she is only three years old. They are a terrific sibling pair, and the love between them and parents Jeni and Aaron is so real you can almost reach out and touch it. Thank you for a terrific morning and a great session!

Here is Miss Madeline just past the one year mark. Compare with her newborn images, and her second session late last year when she was five months old. I think she put all of her energy into growing her beautiful hair! She is developing with a super consistent personality - she is a detail girl, fascinated by the little things, and is happiest in an environment of her choosing. She has definite opinions, she adores her parents, she could happily play with water for an extended period of time but isn’t so convinced the ocean isn’t scary. It is such a pleasure documenting her first year, and watching her grow. Thank you seems hardly adequate for such a privilege and joy - but thank you Julie, Rob and Madeline!

Ryder too has done so much growing. He is “more” himself - more outgoing, more adventurous, even more polite and considerate! How many preschoolers can you say have that going for them?! The kids worked off lots of energy racing up and down the beach, finding beautiful seashells, and dipping their feet in the Pacific. Ella is almost seven years old, and loves the outdoors, dolls, and wearing dresses - she’s also a gymnast, loves to dance, and has a deep sense of curiosity. At age 13 months, Kai is the quintessential boy toddler - into everything he can get his hands on, has no fear of dirt (see last photo), and greets the world with a big warm smile. We have such a variety of images from this session; I decided to post the most fun ones. Could I get any luckier? I’ll say it again… I have the nicest families. Proud Nana Sharla knew exactly what she wanted. On a picture-perfect San Diego evening, we created some portraits of the entire family. The main purpose was an extended family portrait. Sharla’s was the winning bid at the Flora Vista Elementary School auction, and she will have her work cut out for her trying to choose her images! I also took some time to individual portraits of all her grandchildren. I think they each have such beautiful eyes, I picked a few here to share that really show them off. Thank you to Sharla & Mike, Scott & Diane, their sons Daniel and Dustin, Roger & Annette and their children Hannah and Nicholas. I enjoyed working with all of you!

She and Lasha are excited about the birth of their baby girl in just a month. She will be the first granddaughter on either side of the family - so many people are anticipating her arrival! Lasha and Dani are my kind of people… they chose to have a destination wedding on Santorini! Although this shooting location doesn’t quite compare, we did find lots of beautiful light and texture. Just as we were headed out, an amazing peacock decided to put on a show! Sometimes luck just follows you. I hope that this is true for this couple always! I had a great time exploring Leo Carillo Ranch with you both, and I can’t wait to photograph baby Ella on the outside!

Olie has the energy that only three year-olds can really lay claim to, with an avid interest in exploring the great outdoors, being mostly naked, and playing hard - sometimes all at once. =) Milo is just a little love bug, with dark eyes that you can fall into and lose yourself in. I have a love-hate relationship with Thomas, that cheeky little blue tank engine. I’m not a big fan of “characters” in the first place, and there’s only so much Thomas a mom can take. But I love what Thomas has done for Andrew. My son has had a love affair with trains since he was an infant. It was his Thomas train table that encouraged him to first stand, then take steps. In the preschool years, Dave and I have spent hours downloading track layouts and building them for Andrew. Andrew is happily imagining and constructing his own track layouts now, often taking over entire rooms. Dave asked me to take a moment and document this memorable time in our son’s life. I’m not sure how much longer Thomas will be an important part of Andrew’s play. I get teary-eyed thinking of him moving on from his wooden railway “friends.” So we continue to make room for Thomas, and for Andrew’s construction projects. Here are a few recent images; I wish that I had dozens more from each of his years of playing with Thomas.

So I was tickled when Dana, a client from last year’s calendar shoot asked me to photograph her extended family as a surprise gift to their mom for Mother’s Day. We got together with her brother Chris, his charming wife Nancy, and their children Isabelle and Dominic at Coronado’s dog beach so that Dana’s Labrador, Chamois, could also be included. I think it’s a toss-up as to who had more fun - but if we judge by who got the wettest, Chamois and Dominic tied for first place! Thank you to Dana and Chris for asking me to photograph your families; I’m glad you let Nancy in on the surprise so that she could be a part of this, too!

The negative low tide revealed some beautiful tidepools; the boys loved exploring them! You can see all the growing up that both boys have done since our first session together. Kai was so into following big brother Ryder all over the beach, and he has so much to say! His response - “He’s got hair!” Yes, among other major changes… he walks, he climbs, he talks, and has well-defined opinions. But he is also the same sweet boy I met a year ago as a baby, who is very attached to his parents and loves being outdoors. We photographed their second session last weekend as we continue to document Mason’s first year. It is such a joy to watch them grow! Mason is not only crawling, but walks along furniture and pushes chairs around the house. Quite a difference from our first session together! I love the image below of the two brothers; we found a creative way to keep Mason in one place long enough to take this one. We enjoyed the Santa Ana winds at the beach yesterday evening, and the tidepools exposed by the  negative tide. We saw huge starfish, teeny tiny hermit crabs, and shells of all shapes and sizes. Always have been, and being “out there” in the public eye is challenging for me. I’ll be the wallflower at any party, if you can force me to go in the first place. =) But on Friday night I put on my best smile and attended the opening reception for the Starfish Portrait exhibit at Dr. Robert Biter’s office. Thank you so much - to each and every person who attended - for being there, for being so nice, so easy to talk to, and so much fun. Part of why I decided to take on this portrait project was to bring together the community that Dr. B is an essential part of. We raised funds for Her Heart’s Wish, which was just icing on the cake. This won’t be the last of the Starfish Portraits… stay tuned for exciting stuff in 2009! It was an honor and a privilege to meet new friends, to reunite with old ones, and to be a part of this community.

Suzy J. has agreed to read through the nominations and choose one family who will receive a free portrait session. To nominate a family, simply send me an email, telling us why you want to nominate this family. Let’s make Suzy’s task easier and limit the email to one page. The development and growth of babies is truly amazing. But the coolest part is that Jet is still the same little guy - he’s curious, very attached to his parents, loves to try and figure out how things work. I rarely use the blog to publish personal appeals, but I think you’ll agree that this one is worthy, and is very close to my heart. Our friends Garry and Suzy Jackson, along with children Wesley (age four) and Molly (age 3), are looking to expand their family with an open adoption. They suffered the loss of their newborn baby girl, Abby, several months ago, when she was just 11 days old. After much grieving and counseling, they started looking into the adoption process, and found that it felt just right for them. As they put it, they “have a lot of love to share and opportunities to give a child, and believe that somewhere out there is a little person waiting to join us.” You can read more about their story here; they have written an open letter to a birthmother.

I have known Garry and Suzy for about four years; our sons are the same age, and both Andrew and I love our playdates with the Jacksons. I can honestly say that they are two of the best parents I know; they just love children. Family is very important to them, and I hope that their dreams of opening up their hearts to love another child are realized.

There is a peace that surrounds you the minute you close your car door and you start wandering along the footpaths. Tobey and his parents were kind enough to spend a morning there with me, meandering through the garden and enjoying nature. Bullfrogs and butterflies, running water and still ponds are all part of the magic that is Quail. Thank you to Stephen and Claudia and Tobey for the quality time we spent enjoying nature today.

Our starfish project is coming to an end. I loved meeting my two new families, baby Koa and parents Keith and Angela, and expectant parents Scott and Amy. The twins, Eden and Alex, I have had the pleasure of photographing since they were on the inside - I always love seeing them, each time they surprise me with how much they have grown and how their personalities shine through. They are seven months old now; you can see their newborn photos here; they also won top prize for our Best of 2007 contest!

I honestly can’t decide who gets the amazing family award - Koa’s parents, who let me put their infant in the kelp, Amy and Scott, who drove from the O.C. at 12 days past their due date, or Alex and Eden’s parents, who trusted me enough to attempt laying their babies on the sand with a quickly rising tide - sorry that one didn’t work out!! Big thanks and big hugs to all the families tonight - thank you so much for participating in this project, can’t wait to share the final results with everyone! In the meantime, here are a few sneak peeks.
